Phew. I am very tired from my long run today. I did 16 miles, so after being quite rubbish last week, I am back on track for the Long Ducker. It took me close to three hours, so I had to time to ponder a lot of things, including this week's Monday Mystery, which is...
What is the point of itching?
I can think of no time when scratching the thing that itches is good idea. It always makes the itching thing worse. So why do we have itching? I'm not saying we should have something like pain instead, pain is not very nice, but how about some other kind of sensation that says, "Hey, healing in progress - do not touch"?
Itching is a Monday Mystery to me. What say you?

Personally I think scratching an itch feels great. But then I think sneezing feels good too (ever needed to sneeze but then don't? It's not pleasant). But the point is, why do we have to itch at all? After all, if we didn't know we were itchy, then we wouldn't scratch it.
Well that's kind of what I mean - scrathing it feels good when you do it, but it is bad for whatever you're scratching.
Insect bites
Chicken pox
Healing scabs
Rashing
etc, etc
Scratching always makes it worse, so why do we itch?
I'm a big fan of sneezing though, I'm sure I read somewhere once that it's like a mini orgasm. Actually, I don't know if I like it THAT much ...
It's a little bit psychosomatic I hear. Like if you think about an itch, it's there. sort lf like seeing someone yawn, makes one yawn.
Most of it is mental. Unless you have fleas that is.
I don't know either. But it sure feels good.
Thanks for that, you have made me itch all over.
As a lifelong sufferer from eczema, I can agree wholeheartedly with your premise that scratching causes untold misery..
I read recently that in eczema, and some other ailments, the nerves misbehave, blot out the normal pain that should be felt, as damage is being done, and in fact give a temporary feeling of relief..
So that's why we do it.
However so far, I've not met any product that really blocks the itch.
Drew 3000: I'm sure it is, I was itching like crazy just writing that post!
Damain: Ah yes, like picking at a scab - another of life's forbidden pleasures.
Tracy: Sorry... It's a scratching post. Ha ha. God, I'm funny.
Soubriquet: Ahh, that makes sense. But why the sensation of itching - why not buring or some other thing that wouldn't make us scratch?
Scratching a temporary itch is another thing altogether - if you get a little tickle somewhere a little scratch is just what you need. It's only when the itch is quite extreme that scratching is a bad idea.
